Fantastic suggestion and something that’s worked well for me in the past. The best way to get to know a candidate is to actually see their work-product, and it’s even better if you get a chance to work with them during a trial period or something like that. This is why it’s often a great idea to start working with a potential new hire on a consulting basis – pay them for their time, but find out if your work styles are compatible before you bring them on full-time.
Doesn’t make sense for all types of hires (especially more administrative / processing positions), but it does for many.
